For everyone who trains at UCSC, we’ve moved the Tuesday practice to Thursday. Same time (8:00pm-10:00om), same place (racquetball courts), different day (Thursday). Hope to see you guys there!

Where: Silicon Valley Branch Dojo
Why: You get to eat good food, watch kempo members perform embus, spar with each other, and just have a good time in general

Where: Silicon Valley Branch Dojo
Why: Mochi = tasty nom noms

No Practice Tuesday 11/11/08

Veteran’s Day holiday. No practice. Enjoy your day off, or practice kempo at home like the nerds that you are. Lol.

Fall Quarter 2008 Practice Times & Locations

Practice this quarter is the same as the previous quarters:
Tuesday 8PM-10PM at the racquetball courts (#1)
Sunday 1PM-3PM at the martial arts room

Please refer to the maps/images on the “About the UCSC Shorinji Kempo Club” page (link to your right) if you do not know where either location is.

No prior martial arts experience is necessary.

First North American Taikai

As some of you may know this past Sunday, October 5, 2008, was the first North American Taikai. Several of our members participated and received medals. There were four categories: paired embu, single form embu, group embu, and sparring. Medals were awarded for the first three categories at the closing ceremony. Unfortunately, due to a time crunch, the sparing medals could not be announced. Listed below are the members of the UCSC Shorinji Kempo club (current and former) that received awards. Another post will be made when the sparring results are announced.

Summer Practice

No Tuesday Kempo practices for the summer.

Sunday practices are still held from 1PM – 3 PM in the Martial Arts Room.

There’s no kempo this Sunday because Ryuta is in Japan testing for his 4th Dan!

Kaiso Day BBQ!

No practice this Sunday, because it’s Kaiso Day!

For those of you interested, the BBQ will be in Linda Vista Park in Cupertino from 11 AM – ??.  But don’t worry, you don’t have to stay the whole time… whenver it ends.

The price is $10 and everyone and your friends are invited as well. There will be lots of delicious food and really fun activities like football, watermelon smashing, tug-o-war, and lots of other fun stuff!

Kempo BBQ!

No Practice on Sunday, April 27, 2007.  The facility will be needed for something else.

Instead, come join us for a BBQ!

There will be American and Korean style BBQ and delicious sushi!

Cost: $8 non-Kempo members and $6 for Kempo members.

This is a fundraising event. The money collected will go to the UCSC Shorinji Kempo Club to buy equipment, etc. Some of the money collected will also go to UNICEF for Kaiso-Day fundraising event.

Black Belt Practice

Special black belt practices are every second monday of every month in the Silicon Valley branch’s dojo.

Testing Dates

Testing dates for 3rd, 2nd, and 1st Kyu are the last Saturday of every month (except for Decembers, unless okayed by Hirayama Sensei (Silicon Valley Branch)).

Testing Dates for Shodan are the last Saturday of every other month:
February
April
June
August
October
(December, if okayed by Hirayama Sensei)

All testing will occur at the Silicon Valley Branch.

Make sure that your homework is turned into Hirayama Sensei at least 2-3 weeks prior to your test date; and that all testing fees are turned into Sophy Shum to give to sensei.
